Confidence in our surgical facilities and the experience of our surgeons enables us to extend the service we offer and often receive referrals from other practices. It is appreciated that travelling horses to referral centres out of the area is expensive and time consuming and sometimes, as in colic cases, surgery is better performed sooner, rather than after a journey of several hours.
Our air-conditioned equine operating theatre is lined with easily cleaned plastic and non-slip flooring. It has an in-built emergency lighting system in case of power cuts and an operating table that came highly recommended from Finland. It is used by our veterinary surgeons for our more serious equine operations such as colic cases. The table itself is all electronically operated. It can tilt and manoeuvre to accommodate all types and sizes of horse. It is inflatable and well padded, so that during operations horses are kept comfortable and the muscles maintain their blood flow. Horses are delivered to the operating table from our fully padded anaesthetic box, via an electric hoist.
The operating theatre itself is kept clear of unnecessary equipment to ensure it is kept sterile, however it does benefit from ECG, anaesthetic and respiration machines supervised by an anaesthetist throughout the procedure monitoring respiration rate, pulse rate, blood pressure and the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood.
Our most common surgical procedures undertaken are rig operations, hernia repairs and colic surgeries.
