The majority of castrations are performed while the horse is standing under heavy sedation and local anaesthetic. We can do this either at the surgery or on your own premises.
It is a relatively safe procedure, however as it is often performed off site there is the chance of some infection that may need antibiotics.
Occasionally, some cases require a general anaesthetic. These tend to include older animals, cryptorchids (rigs) and smaller ponies. In these cases we prefer to perform the operations at the surgery where we can ensure a sterile environment and minimise any risk from the anaesthetic. We carry out many rig operations on ponies and horses each year.
