Laser Surgery Clinics

Until recently, laser surgery was only available at a small number of referral centres; however we now have the option of laser surgery at Rase Equine to treat horses suffering from skin conditions such as sarcoids.

Sarcoids removed surgically must be done so with care not to leave any of the sarcoid tissue behind. This risk is reduced if a laser is used instead of a normal scalpel blade.

The laser provides a non-invasive method which cuts through the skin and other soft tissues, but unlike a surgical blade it seals the small blood vessels immediately resulting in less blood loss. The laser can be used to remove sarcoids from most areas of the body including ears, girth and sheath. Many times this can be done standing under sedation. However, if the sarcoids are very numerous, difficult to access, deeply rooted or close to valuable structures such as large blood vessels and nerves a general anaesthetic will be necessary.

In most cases, the treatment will be done with no need for your horse to stay in. The wound will be left open and heal in 3-6 weeks, treating as you would any other minor skin injury.

Please contact us to discuss if laser treatment may be a viable option to you, and to find out the date of our next clinic.
